Cones are actually female flowers that develop on coniferous tree species. These flowers contain the actual seeds that, if conditions are right, will germinate into trees. Depending upon the species, a cone may contain as few as ten or as many as several hundred seeds. While cones are female flowers, there are also male flowers which contain the pollen needed to fertilize the seeds in these cones. | |
