Coastal Ecology research opportunities for university students, May - November 2001The Irving Eco-Centre: La Dune de Bouctouche was developed by J.D.Irving Limited to preserve and restore one of the few remaining undeveloped sand dunes on the north eastern coastline of North America. Located on Canada's Northumberland Strait, opposite Prince Edward Island, the white sand dune stretches 12 km across Bouctouche Bay in New Brunswick. This environmentally significant area is the habitat for a rich variety of marine and aquatic plants and animals, and for shorebirds and migratory birds. Each summer the Irving Eco-Centre will accept dune or coastal wetland ecosystem researchers who want to work in a living laboratory to compile data needed for their university theses on the ecosystems of coastal dune or coastal wetlands. For French-speaking students post graduate studies in this field are available with the Université de Moncton. Visit their website for more information.
The past season (May November 2000) has been busy and interesting for its research projects on site, including a study on coastal erosion, another on the red fox population and a rare plant inventory ( in co-operation with Kouchibouguac National Park). Regular monitoring projects on birds (piping plovers and other shorebirds) and beach profiles were also pursued this year. Review the 2000 Research Projects
