Forest Management Cycle

Step 5: Operating Plan

Annual Implementation ... what work will actually be done? The work is done following the company’s Best Management Practices. Activity on the ground is reported so that the maps and inventory can be updated regularly. Foresters also report what they see and adjust to impact the Inventory as they carry out their work in order to ensure that the Management Plan includes the latest information. The Operating Plan for the area includes checklists for the supervisors who give work orders with maps of the block to the workers who carry out the harvest or the planting, etc. Every operation has measurable objectives and results.

A sample work order.

  1. Heading and identification area. Who is doing the work and where.
  2. Standard Operating Procedures. These are important to every job and track such things as water protection and habitat and biodiversity conservation.
  3. The prescription information. How should the forest block be harvested? What water or unique plant or wildlife features need to be looked after? Details about how to cut the block are contained here.
  4. Final product information. What kind of lumber is to be created?
  5. Signoff by Irving Forester and the contractor.
  6. Any problems with the job, such as not following the prescription, are recorded here.
  7. Followup actions, such as training that is required to remedy a problem are recorded here. Final sign off of the job is also noted here.
