"By sharing the issues, challenges, the impact, career opportunities and advancements of our forest products industry, the Institute is an invitation for educators to become more informed and to become part of the dialogue. Teachers are the guides and mentors of our young people - the future stewards of the forest."

Institute Overview

From Sunday afternoon, July 20, 1997 to early Friday morning, July 25 some 135 educators, largely teachers from grades 6 to 12 in New Brunswick's French and English school systems, took part in the Irving Forest Discovery Institute at the Maritime Forestry Complex in Fredericton. Community colleges in both New Brunswick and Nova Scotia sent delegates. Nova Scotia's contingent of 21 came from as far away as Yarmouth, Colchester and Port Williams. Two educators arrived from Maine. For the five days, educators participated in a diverse learning experience with facilitators from the New Brunswick Department of Education - teachers, Deborah Fisher (Institute coordinator) and Claudette Vautour from District 1 - and with J.D. Irving, Limited personnel. The Irving Forest Discovery Institute offered five days of tours, talks, panels and many opportunities for dialogue.

Sunday - Day One

Jim Irving enjoyed his time with Institute members.

The bilingual Institute was sponsored by the Irving forest products company with the New Brunswick Department of Education. In his welcome on Sunday evening, Jim Irving, General Manager of J. D. Irving, Limited, pointed out the Institute's goal was to open dialogue between the forest industry and educators. By knowing more about the industry and its responses to environmental and other concerns, teachers can share this knowledge with their students. The importance of forestry in the Maritimes will be recognized. Students may consider making a career in the forest industry.
