J.D. Irving, Limited Continues
Educational Partnership
With an innovative five days of discovery: The Irving Forest Discovery Institute at theHugh
John Flemming Forestry Centre in Fredericton, July 20 - 25, 1997.
Greenpeace founder, Patrick Moore, is only one
of many outstanding speakers who will discuss Canadian forestry issues and
challenges for the 21st century. This in-depth experience offers tours,
talks and dialogue about forestry's future. Educators will have unique networking
with colleagues and industry professionals, and an opportunity to develop
new forestry materials for their classrooms.
The institute will draw resource people and materials
from the complex's grouping of the Canadian Forestry Service with its labs
and library, the New Brunswick Department of Natural Resources and Energy,
the Maritime Forest Ranger School and the University of New Brunswick's
Tweeddale Centre for Industrial Forest Research. There will be two days
of touring to woodland sites, a sawmill, a nursery operation, and forestry-related
museums. Evenings will include fun activities in the community as well as
networking opportunities and free time. J.D. Irving, Limited is offering
the institute, including meals and accommodations for the five days, at
no cost to participants.
As part of the networking, participants will be
divided into groups and challenged to develop something to interest students
about forestry - a game or puzzle, a lesson plan or group project. Educators
will return to their schools with a new understanding of forestry in New
Brunswick, and some practical forestry-related materials to use with their
students.
Teachers, administrators, district and department
personnel will be nominated by each New Brunswick school district to fill
the institute's limited spaces. (An allocation of seats has been set aside
for each district). Preference will be given to educators at the middle
school level (grades 5 - 8) and high school. Consideration will also be
given to applicants from Nova Scotia and Maine schools. The institute will
be bilingual with translation services available where necessary. Application
forms are available from school and district offices or by contacting the
institute's coordinator, Ms. Deborah Fisher, at 506-386-1688 (fax 386-3472).
Deadline for applications to reach school district offices is May 15, 1997. |
