[6]Sorting

Once the logs have been debarked, they individually pass through a computerized scanner which groups the logs into various sorting bins according to their length, their diameter and amount of warp or bow (the amount of curve or twist in each one).

An operator then sets his machine according to the cutting program designated to the selected bin.

All logs in the bin are processed by machines called headrigs. Two round sides are chipped and/or sawn off, producing two parallel flat surfaces on the log. The chipped and/or sawn log is now called a "cant".
