The lumber from the edger is re-scanned with precise lasers so trimmer saws can remove the physical defects on the lumber. The trimmer operator can also use a fluorescent chalk to identify the location of imperfections such as large knots.
The symbols made by the operator are read by a camera which sends the information to the scanner to trim the lumber to set lengths.
