My name is Kavitha, and I am an undergraduate student at
York
University. I am writing my thesis on the effect of pulp effluents
on the environment. I would be much obliged if you would send
me
any information pertaining to this topic.
To answer your questions , I would like to refer you to the
our online brochures entitled Facts On Paper Making, and Facts

I am trying to set up a recyled paper mill in Canmore Alberta.
The paper is hand pulled and made with only recycled materials.
The paper products are unique. What advice do you have in terms
of gaining support for a business? I have looked night after
night for hand made paper mills ( on the net). There seems to
be no one out there as a small business.
I'm afraid I can't offer much advice in terms of gaining support
for a small business other than the usual routes of enlisting
the help of your local chamber of commerce to help in advertising
your product. On the east coast, the local YM-YWCA holds classes
on entreprenurial skills and marketing. Does your area have a
business developement commission?
Although I don't know exactly know what your product is, I
do have the name of a distributor of products who may be interested
in recycled paper products. Her company had a line of handmade
paper greeting cards with wildflower seeds embedded in them.
Seemed like a good idea to me.

Has your company considered becomming FSC certified?
Is your company ISO Certified?
J.D. Irving, Limited is working towards having our forest
lands certified. We have recently undergone a pilot certification
audit for one of our forest units following the Forest Stewardship
Council (FSC) principles and criteria. We hope to make an announcement
regarding this pilot certification land base within the next
several months.
Within the next two years we plan to have all of our forest
lands certified under either the Canadian Standards Associations
(CSA) or the FSC system, or both.
At present an International Standards Organization (ISO) certification
system for the forest lands has not yet been finalized. Several
of our mills, however, have been certified according to the ISO
9000 process.

How long does it take for paper to be processed?
At our paper mill, Irving Paper, production is largely a two
part process. Very simply, one part of production is the converting
of raw wood (in the form of chips) into separate wood fibers
called pulp. This process is called pulping. The second part
of the process is the pouring of this pulp onto a fast moving
screen and through hot rolls (in a paper machine) to form a sheet
of paper.
The speed at which the paper machine operates (up to 50 kilometers
per hour!) is faster than the pulping process can deliver pulp.
To overcome the speed differences, and to allow blending of various
types of pulp for different products, large storage tanks holding
a total of 203,000 liters of pulp ( wood fiber 4% and water 96%
) are filled before the paper machine can operate at full speed.
Theoretically, if pulping did not have to send the pulp to
storage tanks,
the wood chip would be transformed into part of a sheet of paper
in a
matter of minutes . In reality, for various reasons, this method
is not
practical. The entire process (including wrapping the paper rolls
for
shipping) can take from 6 to 12 hours. As this process is pretty
much
continuous though, the paper machines are always producing paper
albeit from pulp made hours before.

Hi. My name is Amanda. I am doing a project on softwood
in Exploring Technology class. How long does softwood live? Please
answer my question. Thanxs.
The number of different species of native softwood in the
Maritimes is as
diverse as the species of wildflowers growing along the roadsides.
Each
flower blooms at a different time of the growing season and each
lives a
different period of time. Trees are like this as well, as you
can see from the
following chart of general life expectancies for the Maritimes'
most
common softwoods:
SPECIES LIFE EXPECTANCY
White Spruce (Picea glauca) - 100-200 years
Black Spruce (Picea mariana) - 150-250
Red Spruce (Picea rubens) - 250-350
Tamarack (Larix laricina) - 100-180
Balsam Fir (Abies balsamea) - 70-150
Jack Pine (Pinus banksiana) - 80-130
Red Pine (Pinus resinosa) - 150-200
White Pine (Pinus strobus) - 200-400
Eastern Cedar (Thuja occidentalis) - 150-350
Eastern Hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) - 300-400
