Distribution

In Europe, wild salmon populations are presently found in countries having rivers draining to the Atlantic Ocean or Baltic sea, from Spain, north through Europe and Scandinavia, to Russia’s Pechora River. The species used to occur in Portugal and Germany, but was driven to extinction. Restoration programs are being started in both countries to fix the problems that caused extinction..

In North America, wild populations are found in Maine in the USA, and north to Canada’s Atlantic provinces. Salmon used to occur in the United States at least as far south as the Connecticut River, but have been driven to extinction. There is a major restoration program underway in this river.

Restoration success has been poorer than hoped. Once a salmon population is lost, it is very hard to develop a new one.
