| This site contains fossils in a limestone ridge, both on the shore of the
lake and in the shallow water. Two types of corals have been found here
along with six types of brachiopods (bivalves which look a bit like clams)
and a few crinoids ("sea-lilies", flower-like animals related
to sea-stars). These fossils may not sound as interesting as dinosaur bones
but they do have an amazing story to tell. |
All of these animals are "marine", that is, they lived in sea
water. So how did they get into northern Maine, more than 260 kilometres
from the Atlantic Ocean? Palaeontologists (scientists who study fossils)
know from these fossils that this whole area of Maine was once covered by
an ancient sea. |
